Although Melamin is considered as poorly reactive, it is suitable due to its symmetry and functionality as synthesis component in condensation reactions with formaldehyde. First thereby Methylolverbindungen, these develop react then with one another and under splitting off from water and formaldehyde developed for Methylenether and/or bridgebridge bridges.

Such a condensation reaction is necessary also for the production of Melaminfabrics. Due to the network architecture developing thereby the Melaminfabrics shows also characteristic characteristics of such condensation resins such as hardness, chemical stability and flame-retardance.
